They only show how the work was carried out, and the reader is asked to remember that they can falsify it photographs can reduce, detract, fragment, frame, flatten. Photographic reproduction of my work can only be imprecise. Finally, if there is such a thing as the “reality” of photography, it is never the same as the “reality” of the work photographed, and we are not concerned here with overcoming this gap.’

This work is representative for an interest that Gerz develops since the beginning of the seventies, which is about the relationship between text and image and about ‘impossiblitly of representation’. This work exemplifies Gerz notion that : “A photograph is a way of writing”

- First edition. One of 600 numbered and signed copies. ‘Last summer in Germany, rummaging through flee markets, I collected some old postcards and photographs. The collection was made casually just picking out what struck my fancy. One night I noticed certain photographs were of the same people. Other cards seemed to go together because of similar structural elements. I began to group and regroup the material, pairing images visually, narratively, and numerically, seeing contrasts and similarities of form, subject, location, time, or emotion. Sometimes there were surprises. These five cards are one distillation from this process. They might imply a story, or a dream, perhaps a souvenir of a summer abroad. They are for reflection. Including "scenarios" by The Gutai Group, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kenneth Dewey, Milan Knizak, and Allan Kaprow and this very interesting: "NOTE ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS. Photographs of art works have their own reality and sometimes they are art in turn. Those taken of the subject of this book tend to be particularly free. They refer to their models, but strangely, as would a movie taken of a dream, stopped at unexpected intervals. A movie of a dream cannot be the dream, and a frame, here and there pulled from it, must leave the viewer guessing even more. Yet guessing is dreaming too, and if we can never know another man's dream as he knows it, we can come close to the spirit of his activity by engaging in a similar process. Beyond art, sharing in dream processes is probably what we call reality. I have put together these photographs, therefore, in a way that would entourage such reverie. The result, in my view, comes close to the character and meaning of the individual works, as well as their larger relations to each other and to a moment in time. Conventional grouping of data in chronological order has been perfectly valid; but this is dreaming also, and I have watched this reel too many times to pay attention any longer." Photographs by Ay-O, Rudolph Burckhardt, Robert mcElray, Peter Moore, Hans Namuth, Claes Oldenburg, Shunk-Kender, Robert Watts and others.

Exhibition December 1 – 30, 1972 ‘In 1964 Gerhard Richter began amassing onto panels photographs he had collected over the previous few years--sometimes as potential sources for his paintings and sometimes on their own account. Eight years later these and subsequent related panels were exhibited in Utrecht, Holland, under the title Atlas van de foto's en schetsen (Atlas of photos and sketches). Since then Richter has continued, albeit intermittently, to supplement his "picture album."1 And periodically it has been returned to public view: it was shown in 1976 in Krefeld, 1989 in Munich, and 1990 in Cologne.2 Recently updated, it now is comprised of almost six hundred panels and some five thousand photographs.’ Lynne Cooke on Dia art foundtion website.

Interior Monologue.

Acquoy (The Netherlands): sel published, 2009.

Grey clam-shell box containing 128 single-sided sheets. Archival inkjetprints. 5 x 7 inches each.

- First edition. One of numbered 20 numbered and signed copies.

"Interior Monologue pairs images of Parisian apartment interiors from a real-estate catalogue with texts found in the “literary phrases” section of Grenville Kleiser’s Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases.

The project presents abandoned remnants of speech, paired to images that are likewise abandoned: orphaned photos from a real-estate catalogue, snapped by ever so many unidentified photographers. Texts and images look as though they are quite established on their pages, and in a healthy relationship towards each other. This soon proves false. Each element seems to be speaking for itself. The scripts do not function as descriptions; and no knowledge is gained from the information gathered. The development of a narrative is cut short on each page. Meanwhile the reader cannot avoid relating images and texts, and interpreting the images by means of the texts. Even if the combinations of texts and images are determined by chance: the phrases are in alphabetical order and the images are in the order that the magazine they come from presented them in."
