019. Brecht, George - Robert Filliou.
Games at the Cedilla, Or the Cedilla Takes Off. New York: Something Else Press, 1967. Octavo, unpaginated, numerous illustrations. White cloth with red and black printed spine. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers discolored toward spine, otherwise fine.
- First edition. One of 1945 copies. ‘This book is a selective distillate of the notebooks kept by George Brecht and Robert Filliou, the one an American artist and scientist (in whose name there are a number of industrial patents at Washington, D.C.) and the second a southern French sceptic, Robert Filliou, among whose other credits are work on the United Nations white paper on the post-Korean War economic recovery for South Korea and also other economic theses, as well as various uniquely reputed poems, plays, art exhibitions and revolutionary exploits. The Cedilla itself is la Cedille qui Sourit, a shop they operate at Villefranche-sur-mer on the cote d'azure where small works of avant-garde art are sold along with postcards, jewelry (by Donna Jo Brewer/Jones) and all kinds of things which do or do not have a cedilla in their (French) name. And at the Cedilla the notebooks are kept, as the researches are developed, in the manner appropriate to the investigations, with a bottle of either the cheapest pleasant wine or the pleasantest cheap wine, depending upon the occasion. In this way that dread disease to all artists, humorlessitis, is prevented from appearing, and the artists involved (and the others too) remain in good aesthetic health.” (from the back flap). euro 200

The Book of the Tumbler on Fire. Twenty Footnotes to Volume I. Köln: Galerie Rudolf Zwirner Cologne, 1969. Octavo, 8 pages, 2 plates. Wrappers with the Z of Galerie Zwirner on front wrapper.
- First edition. The booklet presents Chapter 14 of The Book of the Tumbler on Fire 'that presents 20 works from a total of 35 footnotes from Volume 1.' Henri Martin writes in An Introduction to George Brecht's Book of the Tumbler on Fire: " Most of George Brecht's objects belong to a continuing and ever-growing collection of works he calls The Book of the Tumbler on Fire, begun in 1964, but later retroactively expanded to include works from as early as 1962. Brecht tells us, «I was thinking of doing a construction which would have consisted of a faucet attached to a white porcelin tank, perhaps like the water reservoir of a toilet. The idea was that when the tap was turned on, fire would come out of it instead of water. At the same time I was doing a series of boxes (such as those used for presenting dead butterflies) containing various small objects, which I had been calling "exhibits." It then occured to me that these boxes, being relatively flat, were like "pages," implying a "book ." This idea became uer and uer until I found myself looking for a book title. The " fire-faucet" came to mind, and through a series of associations the ultimate title became fixed." euro 80

Italia ll. N.p.: Edizioni " art-matrix " 1991. Produktion: " art-soli(t)(d)aire " Gold printed and cloth covered portfolio that contains 2 pages with 2 original matted artworks by Al Hansen and 2 original matted color photographic portraits by Hans Herman, stamped, signed and dated on the rear.
- First edition. One of 27 titled, numbered, dated and signed copies. Elizabeth Schambelan wrote on the occasion of a retrospective exhibition of Hansen’s work (Andrea Rosen gallery in 2006): ‘…the exhibition … comprised thirty-six modestly sized collages and sculptures dated from 1962 to 1994, most depicting hansen's favorite motif, a stylized and refreshingly endomorphic female figure he called venus. this buxom lady, sometimes constructed from meticulous agglomerations of matchsticks or cigarette butts, is clearly descended from the paleolithic venus of willendorf, but she's also a cousin of tom wesselman's "great american nude"—a pop goddess, as neatly summed up in the punning title venus of shop-rite dorf, 1965. for both wesselman and hansen, the archetypical pictorial subject, the female nude, was a site on which mass media's alternately exhilarating and alienating dislocations of subjectivity could be writ large—in hansen's case, literally so. “ euro 2.800

050. Kaprow, Allan.
Assemblage: Environments & Happenings. New York: Harry N Abrams, (1965). Squarish quarto, 341 pages, illustrated throughout. Stiff printed wrappers.Wrappers chafed towards edges. Inside fine.
- First soft cover edition. Including "scenarios" by The Gutai Group, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kenneth Dewey, Milan Knizak, and Allan Kaprow and this very interesting: "NOTE ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS. Photographs of art works have their own reality and sometimes they are art in turn. Those taken of the subject of this book tend to be particularly free. They refer to their models, but strangely, as would a movie taken of a dream, stopped at unexpected intervals. A movie of a dream cannot be the dream, and a frame, here and there pulled from it, must leave the viewer guessing even more. Yet guessing is dreaming too, and if we can never know another man's dream as he knows it, we can come close to the spirit of his activity by engaging in a similar process. Beyond art, sharing in dream processes is probably what we call reality. I have put together these photographs, therefore, in a way that would entourage such reverie. The result, in my view, comes close to the character and meaning of the individual works, as well as their larger relations to each other and to a moment in time. Conventional grouping of data in chronological order has been perfectly valid; but this is dreaming also, and I have watched this reel too many times to pay attention any longer." Photographs by Ay-O, Rudolph Burckhardt, Robert mcElray, Peter Moore, Hans Namuth, Claes Oldenburg, Shunk-Kender, Robert Watts and others. euro 90
